Audrey Godoy aka Gavlyn is a Latin American Hip Hop artist from San Fernando Valley, California. She's been rapping for ten years and has been touring Europe consistently for the past six. She went viral in 2012 with her single "What I Do" and since then she's released six albums including a new record produced by DJ Hoppa, Headspace.
As a featured artist on DJ Hoppa's record label Broken Complex, Gavlyn has been hypnotizing the EM headquarters with her sound. Headspace has become an instant favorite. We loved it so much we had to share so we met up with Godoy in DTLA for an impromptu photo shoot and to chat about her style and career.
What are some of the key themes in Headspace?
The key themes of Headspace are all the different mental states I was in creating the project. It’s very personal and in depth to my emotions in everyday life and as an artist.
Tell us a little about the creative process behind the album.
The creative process behind this album (with me and DJ Hoppa who is the producer of the whole album) was very fun and well thought out; we made sure that we had a concept for every song that is (for the most part) relatable to everyone but still making it our own. We made sure that we didn't leave the studio without feeling like we made a banger; we made it a point to feel genuinely juiced off whatever were making and to be leaving with our song stuck in our heads.
What has been your favorite performance so far and why?
When it comes to my favorite performance there is too many to count. I would say my favorite type of performance would be high energy the whole time and I always admire an audience that truly listens and really eats up the moment.
Who are some of your dream collaborators?
Some my dream Collaborators would be Gorillaz, Kaytranada, Pete Rock and DJ Premire; they are literally some of my favorite artist on this planet.
How would you describe your musical style? Who are some of your key influences?
I would describe my style as very 90s Boom Bap, lyrical, soulful Hip Hop. Some of my Key influences are Lauren Hill, Jean Grea, Little Brother, and Helta Skelta.
What do you have coming up we should know about?
I have European tour coming up in October with another fellow female rapper Reverie and most definitely new music coming from me and DJ Hoppa this year as well.
Who are some of your favorite designers and why?
I'm a big fan of Tommy Hilfiger I'm in love with the classic throw back style they have, and Im in love with their denim as well.
What would be some points of advice you would offer to other women seeking similar creative paths?
My advice to woman out there would be to stay focused, truly make an effort to believe in your self and embrace the woman around you as well.
How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my style as very tomboy, 90's , chola style.
